Palliative Care & Massage Therapy

Specialist massage support for those living with serious illness, and for their carers or family.

Massage can offer gentle, supportive care for people living with life-limiting conditions, as well as for those close to them.

It is not a treatment for illness.

But it can create comfort, connection, and moments of ease within what can often be a challenging time.

With over 30 years’ experience—including working within the NHS with people living with conditions such as MS, cancer, Parkinson’s, and a wide range of disabilities—I adapt each session to meet the person exactly as they are, physically, emotionally, and energetically, on that day.

A Gentle, Responsive Approach

In palliative care, the body’s needs can change from day to day.

Massage is always adapted accordingly:

Pressure is typically light and calming

Positioning is adjusted for comfort (bed, chair, or supported lying)

Full respect is given to pain levels, fatigue, and medical equipment

Sessions can be shorter, quieter, and more spacious

We work slowly and attentively, with consent and communication at the centre of the session.

Why Massage?

Massage in this context may help to ease:

Muscular discomfort or tension

Fatigue and restlessness

Anxiety, stress, or low mood

Discomfort from prolonged stillness

A sense of disconnection or isolation

Sometimes the most meaningful aspect is not physical relief, but the simple experience of being met with care, warmth, and presence.

Connection Through Touch

Touch can be deeply reassuring.

For some people, it remains one of the most accessible senses, even when communication becomes limited.

A hand held with care, or a gentle, steady contact, can support a sense of grounding, dignity, and connection.

Massage in this setting is not about technique—it is about relationship, presence, and listening through touch.

Working Alongside Your Care

With your consent, I am happy to liaise with your GP, hospital team, hospice, or other care providers to ensure that massage is appropriate and safely integrated into your overall care.

Carers or family are welcome to be part of this conversation where helpful.

Quality of Life Support

Living with cancer or a life-limiting condition can affect both body and mind in many ways.

Massage is a complementary therapy that can support quality of life alongside medical treatment.

It may help to:

Reduce fatigue and support energy levels

Ease muscular pain and physical discomfort

Support sleep

Reduce stress and anxiety

Offer gentle support with nausea through acupressure

Encourage relaxation and nervous system regulation

It also provides something often missing in clinical environments: safe, positive touch.

Practical Information

Sessions can take place at home, where appropriate

Shorter sessions are available

Carers or family members can also book sessions

This work is offered with care, respect, and attention to the whole person.

Massage for Carers or Family

Supporting someone with a serious illness can be physically and emotionally demanding.

Often, carers or family members place their own needs last.

Massage offers a space where you can:

Release accumulated tension

Rest deeply, even for a short time

Support your own nervous system

Be held in the same care that you offer to others

Taking care of yourself is not separate from caring—it is part of sustaining it.
